Hearn Veterans Village

Description 0

Hearn Veterans Village will provide 32 homeless veterans with permanent, supportive housing. A 2-acre parcel in Santa Rosa has been subdivided into four lots, each of which will contain one 6-bedroom house and one 2-bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Homes are being designed to reflect a modern California ranch vernacular with low-sloping roofs, durable exterior siding materials, and generous outdoor spaces. The larger site has been designed to create a community for the residents, with a variety of shared, common outdoor rooms for different sized groups and activities.

Each house will be approximately 3,100 square feet and will include a great room comprising kitchen, dining, and living rooms, as well as laundry, office, and 6 bedrooms. Each ADU will be approximately 1,000 square feet and will include an open living, dining and kitchen area, as well as 2 bedrooms. The design encourages residents to gather, cook, share meals, do laundry, and relax in a shared living environment, as well as retreat to their individual bedrooms for privacy. Universal design principles are being employed in ground floor spaces of all the homes to ensure access for aging residents, as well as those with mobility impairments.

The goal is for the homes to be designed and built to zero net energy, which will be accomplished by complying with the City of Santa Rosa’s All Electric Reach code and on-site electricity generation. The project will incorporate durable and low-toxic interior materials for reduced long-term maintenance costs and resident health.
